The father of O'Grady was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised by her parents who resided in Wheaton within Illinois and then graduated in 1981 with a diploma from the Wheaton North High School. She appeared in a few commercials before shifting in Los Angeles in 1986. O'Grady's career began as a model and commercial actress for Montgomery Ward.
